Weezer dig up live rarities to open The Gathering tour in Sacramento

Weezer launched their Gathering tour on Tuesday night at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, and they used the opening date to pull several songs out of long-term live retirement. The arena run continues across the United States for the next month and a half, with the Shins and Silversun Pickups opening.

The 26-song set mixed the expected hits with deeper material. Maladroit cuts "Keep Fishin'" and "Slob" returned, the latter for the first time since 2005, alongside the Pinkerton album track "No Other One" and "Lonely Girl" from Everything Will Be Alright In The End, absent since 2014. "Aloo Gobi" got its first full-band performance.

The stage was designed to resemble a suburban house, and the band swapped instruments during the middle of the show. Rivers Cuomo moved to drums for "Pork And Beans" while Pat Wilson took guitar, and "Longtime Sunshine" featured Brian Bell on flute. During "El Scorcho," Cuomo tweaked a lyric to reference a Deftones concert.

Silversun Pickups' Nikki Monninger joined for three numbers, among them "We Might As Well Be Strangers," the recent collaboration with Wednesday. The night closed out with "Undone - The Sweater Song," "Say It Ain't So," "Buddy Holly" and "Island In The Sun."

The tour follows the release of the Gold Album a few weeks ago, recorded with producers Kenneth Blume and Klas Åhlund. A European leg is planned for next year, with Taking Back Sunday along as support.
