New list gathers 35 rock bands named after another artist's song

A new Loudwire feature collects 35 cases of rock and metal bands whose names come from the title of another artist's song. In most instances, the piece notes, the choice worked as a nod to the acts that shaped their sound.

Motionless In White and Florida hardcore punk outfit Gouge Away are among the bands cited as examples of groups that borrowed from favorites when settling on an identity. The article points out that tracing the origin of a band name often means digging through its influences.

Not every case comes with a backstory, though. Turnstile share a name with a Hot Water Music song, but vocalist Brendan Yates has downplayed the link. During a 2017 Reddit AMA, he said he simply liked how the word sounded.

The list also reaches deeper into rock history. Deep Purple, formed in England in 1968, took their name from a composition first published in the 1930s. According to American Songwriter, the pick came from guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, whose grandmother loved the tune.
